Wii U System Update Could Go Live Tuesday

Nintendo didn’t give any specific date for the update, but it appears that it could be up and running as soon as Monday as the official website has already started listing release dates for Virtual Console games.

Excitebike, which is also available in the 3DS eShop, has been given a release date of Tuesday 23rd April suggesting the update could happen on Monday 22nd April.

The system update is set to significantly improve the loading times of the Wii U, something many have been crying out for since the console’s launch.

Technically there are a few Wii U Virtual Console titles already available thanks to the trial campaign celebrating the Famicon’s 30th anniversary, which allows you to pick up a classic title for just 30c/30p. Incidentally, Kirby’s Adventure is the fourth game to be made available and you can download it right now.

It’s not official but it certainly looks as though we’ll be enjoying faster loading times and a brand spanking new Wii U Virtual Console very soon.

It looks like Excitebike will be available on day one and we know EarthBound is on the way.

  • Satoru Iwata revealed more details about New Super Luigi U, the upcoming downloadable expansion for New Super Mario Bros. U, during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation. First revealed in February as part of Nintendo’s Year of Luigi, New Super Luigi U takes the “Bros.” out of the equation, giving Mario’s clumsy green brother the spotlight.

While the world map will remain the same, all 82 stages have been redesigned to take advantage of Luigi’s unique abilities. Luigi will be able to jump higher than Mario, but may have trouble stopping after a dash. Many of the stages will start the timer on 100 seconds and challenge Luigi with several obstacles. Iwata noted that these shorter, more frantic stages are designed to encourage multiple playthroughs.

New Super Luigi U is one of many games being released during the Year of Luigi, along with Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, Mario Golf: World Tour, and a new Mario Party title for the 3DS. New Super Luigi U is slated to be released this summer in the US and Europe, with a Winter window for Australia and New Zealand.

Another great title coming to the Wii U, are you convinced to buy the Wii U console yet?

  • Nintendo has confirmed that a Wii U system update will be rolled out worldwide next week. As expected, the update will shorten loading times when switching between applications or returning to the Wii U Menu.

You’ll also be able to copy or move data from one USB hard drive to another, automatically install new software you’ve downloaded in the background and receive updates for games immediately, instead of having to load up the game to trigger the download. In addition to this, you’ll be able to boot the console into Wii mode by holding down the B button when you switch it on. Other improvements are also promised.

The fun doesn’t stop there, however. The day following the update will see the launch of Wii U Panorama View on the Nintendo Wii U eShop, along with a free demo. More excitingly, the Wii U Virtual Console service will begin on the same day.

More exciting Wii U news, with the Console wars on the horizon with the Ps4 and Xbox720 this is great for any Wii U owners including me.

  • While today may have been branded as a 3DS Direct, the Wii U was mentioned and has enjoyed a bit of attention in the huge amount of information to come out of Nintendo since the broadcasts. One of these is an important one for the home console, with confirmed to arrive in North America on 4th August; Europe isn’t quite pinned down, but is promised in “just a few months”.

It’s undoubtedly a high-profile, important title in the hopes of boosting sales and demand for the Wii U, and will ultimately arrive around six weeks or so before the hotly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD; that makes Fall a potentially vital time for the system to build momentum.

Some actual footage was shown in the broadcast, too, revealing a rather awesome Winged Pikmin that can follow the player and carry items in the air. With a release date finally pinned down — in North America at least — we can expect a lot more details to filter out in the coming weeks and months.

Pikimin 3 in a few months in Uk, another one to add to my Wii U collection I guess, is it yours?
